Everybody experiences tension. Whether it?s at work or in a daily life, tension is an essential function of living, just like hunger and thirst. It is a self-proactive reaction when we are confronted by threats to our safety, well being or self-esteem. Here are some practical positive actions you can take.

TALK IT OUT

When something is not right in the office or at home, don?t bottle it up. Share your problem to your immediate superior or someone you can trust. Talking things out will help you solve the problem or at least see it in a clearer light.

ESCAPE FOR A WHILE

Sometimes it helps to escape from painful problem for a while like lose yourself in other activities for a change scene. Making yourself ?stand there and suffer? is a form of self-punishment and it is not a way to solve problem. But come back and deal with your difficulty when you are more composed, emotionally and intellectually.

WORK OFF YOUR ANGER

If you find yourself using anger as a general pattern of behavior, remember that anger will leave you feeling foolish and sorry in the end. If you feel like shouting at someone, try holding off until tomorrow. Working anger out of your system will leave you better prepared to handle your problem.

GIVE IN OCCASIONALLY

If you find yourself getting into frequent arguments in the office and are always feeling obstinate and defiant, rememeber that is the way frustrated children behave. Standing your ground on what your believe is right, but do it calmly and make allowance that you could be wrong. The result will be the achievement of a practical solution, with feeling of satisfaction and maturity.

DO SOMETHING FOR OTHERS

If you worry about yourself all the time, try taking your mind off you and do something for someone else. This will give you a feeling of having done something good.

TAKE ONE THING AT A TIME

To people under tension, an ordinary workload will look too great to handle. When that happens, look into the most urgent tasks one at a time, setting aside the rest for the time being. Once you?re done with the urgent ones, the rest will go more easily.

GO EASILY WITH CRITICISM

Some people expect too much from others, and are frustrated when they do not measure up. Remember each person has a right to develop as an individual. Instead of being critical with others, search out the good points and develop them.

MAKE YOURSELF AVAILABLE

Many of us have the feeling of being left out or neglected. It?s just imagination. Don?t shrink away (it?s more practical to make overtures yourself). There is middle ground between withdrawal and pushing. Try it!

Often, emotional difficulities arise from practical problems. The quest for peace of mind or good mental health is universal. Yet only a few are blessed with all the internal qualities and external circumstances that automatically assure it. We have to work to achieve it. It means striving for a better understanding of ourselves and others. It means working out problems and seeking help when we need it.

Working from home as an alternative to employment in the traditional office has become a popular trend in many countries. In Malaysia it has recently become a hot topic of discussion with the Government?s decision to formally introduce the concept.

The home office concept which was made available by solutions in information and communication technology (ICT) is certainly a welcome as it can encourage women, senior citizens, and the disabled to work or do business from home. Yet, concerns have already emerged on how this concept can successfully take off in the country.

Technology, including the computer and accessories such as printer, the Internet and telephone connection and the training involved only make up a portion of the necessary requirements to set up a home office. Other requirements especially business skills must also be considered. Business skills such as time management, professionalism, work ethics and business negotiations are extremely important for those working from home.

At present, there are various organizations such as the Women?s Institute of Management offering courses in business skills and management. However, this training should be accessible to all besides for women who choose to work from home.

Another challenge in working out of the traditional office environment is getting market access. How does a person working from home get business?

A solution to this could be formal and comprehensive database, perhaps compiled by relevant agencies on services provided by the workforce from the work office. For a start, financial assistance could be provided for those who want to set up a home office. The assistance could be in the form of micro loans to purchase the relevant ICT tools, as well as incentives such as cheaper rates in Internet or telephone connections. Once things start to work out well, frequent review of the work and the environment are necessary.

Unlike working in traditional office, working alone at home could lead to a sense of alienation. Therefore, there must be a balance between working individually and having the proper social and business skills when dealing with clients and customers.

The business and work suited for the home office covers jobs information processing such as editing, writing, research, accounting, telemarketing, and a range of ICT related work such as Website and software development.

Although the initial target group for the home office comprises women, senior citizens and the disabled, ultimately the concept should be extended to anyone who chooses to work from home.

As we all know, this topic is a much discussed one, especially among parents and teachers. The main question which asked is about ?Who should discipline the young?? The parents point their finger at the teachers while the teachers point their fingers back at the parents. How long should this situation happen?

To begin with, we must try to look at this topic carefully and then maybe the issues can be viewed more clearly. Firstly, children spend most of their time at home compared to school. Based on this premise, discipline should begin at home but why parents still point their fingers at the teacher? When children are at home, parents have more time to get to know them on a more informal basis. If we look carefully, this is an important factor. Parents have to take time off to get to know their children better. Otherwise, they would be in a losing battle when it comes to disciplining their children.

In addition, children tend to become closer to people who frequently spend time with them. In becoming attached to these people, many of them are eager to please. When this happens, the disciplining them will not pose any problem. However, parents who are always busy at work, find that they have difficult task of disciplining their children whom them do not really know and the children begin to lose faith in them. Eventually, they lose their respect for such parents and this is the beginning of discipline problems. If parents are unable to make them do what is right, do you think teachers will be able to handle or to do so?

Now, let?s look at the role of a teacher. A teacher has an average of 150 to 200 students to take care of in one day and the average time spent with these students is about four hours out of 24 hours in a day. So, you can think how much attention can a teacher pay on each student? There are so many students but so little time to get to know them. Therefore, teachers are unable to get to know the students as well as their parents can.

Finally, parents who spend more time with their children at home will therefore be able to get to know their children very well. They are definitely in a better position to discipline their own children.
